OPNET Technologies has introduced an array of new capabilities for extending Application Performance Management (APM) to the cloud.

OPNET introduced a new architecture called Federated Analytics, a highly scalable approach to monitoring application performance by distributing key performance analysis functions to the edge, closer to where data originates. Unlike traditional approaches where analysis is performed on a central platform requiring large amounts of data to traverse the infrastructure, Federated Analytics is significantly more efficient and consequently, particularly well suited to the cloud.

“OPNET has introduced federated analytics specifically to address the needs of cloud computing architectures” states Alain Cohen, OPNET’s President and CTO. “Private cloud technology is being adopted rapidly for enterprise applications, and increasingly, public cloud components are being introduced to form hybrid application architectures. As application components scale dynamically and also become more distributed, traditional centralized performance management approaches are not tenable. The concept of distributing performance management and analytics goes hand in hand with the highly scalable and flexible characteristics of cloud computing. ”

The company also introduced new browser-based end user experience (EUE) management, which is particularly suited to measuring response times for applications served from cloud platforms.

Managing Application Performance in Citrix Environments

OPNET also announced a new solution for managing the performance of applications that run in a Citrix environment. This new module for OPNET’s AppResponse Xpert solution provides end-to-end visibility of user transactions that traverse a Citrix server, enabling faster, more accurate diagnosis of application performance problems.

Citrix application virtualization technology enables Microsoft Windows applications to be virtualized and centralized, and delivered to users as a service. It is a prevalent technology for delivering applications due to its ability to vastly reduce administration costs, make more efficient use of IT resources, and improve the performance of enterprise applications over wide area and mobile networks. While powerful and beneficial, the Citrix environment can present new challenges to IT departments when troubleshooting application performance issues.

New Smart Phone App Enables Remote Access of End-User Experience Monitoring

OPNET also introduced AppResponse Xpert Mobile. Users of OPNET’s AppResponse Xpert appliance for end-user experience monitoring can utilize the new mobile application to view application and network performance dashboards optimized for presentation on their mobile device. Users can customize specific views, and set up favorites for quick access.
